Position:
Working in close partnership with the Center's senior program and research teams, this specialist will be responsible for the development of a sustainable system for transit training programs to share with each other curriculum, courseware and instructional materials. The specialist will organize and manage an annotated listing of best practice curriculum and courseware for training in transit bus, rail and facilities maintenance technical occupations. This resource library will identify links to transit properties that have outstanding curriculum and instructional materials and will not contain actual courseware. The specialist will be responsible for outreach to transit training programs, identifying this best practice curriculum and courseware, and maintaining up-to-date contact information in the relevant training programs. The specialist will also assist in the work of developing national standards for training and apprenticeship through national joint labor-management committees working in bus maintenance, rail signals, elevator-escalator maintenance, rail vehicle maintenance and other areas. The specialist may also be called upon to assist in research projects and in representing the Center and its work at meetings of APTA, transit unions and training partnerships, as well as NTI and other industry forums.
Duties:
* Identify best-practice curriculum and course material for maintenance training.
* Develop a sustainable system for transit training programs to share with each other curriculum, courseware and instructional materials.
* Work with IT staff at the Center to develop and continually update a website containing brief descriptions of courseware and current contact information for transit training programs that can share that courseware with other transit agencies
* Monitor changes in industry technology and equipment and anticipate resulting training requirements and practices.
* Manage apprenticeship research and conduct apprenticeship field work, interacting with transit training programs around the country. Extensive travel will be required.
* Assist the Center in development of training standards, conduct site visits, assist partner organizations in the transit industry.
* Perform other related tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree with 5-10 years experience in the transit sector as a technical instructor, apprentice coordinator or training manager. Equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered.
* Demonstrated experience in developing course instructional materials in bus maintenance, rail vehicle maintenance or a related technical area, preferably including electronics
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to assess the effectiveness of instructional materials
* Knowledge of transit training practices beyond a single property preferred
* Demonstrated willingness and ability to work in a labor-management partnership environment
* Strong working knowledge of computer applications, such as Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
* Experience in web and communications desirable
* Ability to work independently and multi-task
* Ability to work in collaborative multi-cultural setting
* Experience with union organizations and/or urban planning/community organizations a definite plus
