Students of SEPTA/TWU Summer Career Training Partnership Celebrate Their Success
On Friday August 27, 2010 graduates of the SEPTA/TWU Summer Career Training Partnership joined other distinguished guests at a closing ceremony luncheon to celebrate the end of a successful summer. These 14 young people from Mastbaum, Swenson and West Philadelphia high school were involved in a rigorous 8 week program where they worked 5 days a week from 6am to 3pm in three different SEPTA shops. They not only learned how to maintain public transit vehicles but also had real world work skills such as timeliness and dependability instilled in them - as students were not allowed to be late or absent more than 3 times during the length of the program. This training has prepared the six graduating seniors - who have all applied for full-time positions with SEPTA - for jobs in the transit industry.
The celebration was attended by students, parents and representatives of many of the partner organizations that made this partnership possible including George Martin, TWU Local 234 Training Coordinator, and Colleen May ,SEPTA Chief Instructor (pictured with students). Other partners that were present include: the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, US Department of Transportation, Keystone Development Partnership, Philadelphia Academies, Transportation Learning Center, The Community College of Philadelphia and the School District of Philadelphia, Career Technical and Education Programs.
