Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen Support National Signals Consortium

Posted December 2015

The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) has partnered with the Transportation Learning Center for more than five years beginning with participation in the signals training standards development committee. Their deep understanding of safety and occupational training has added immeasurably to the National Signals Training Consortium. With experience on freight, passenger and commuter rail there is little the BRS representatives cannot address. The BRS itself has said:

“The BRS strongly believes that the quality training of Signalmen results in proper testing and maintenance of signal equipment, and the utilization of safe work practices and procedures. The FRA’s strict standards in safety and training are of the utmost importance to the BRS, and a top priority of the National Signals Training Consortium. Passing along this wealth of knowledge to the transit and commuter industry is paramount for signal personnel, both management and labor, and affected communities, keeping everyone safe along with the safe operation of trains.  Together, the Transportation Learning Center, the BRS, and the National Signals Training Consortium have accomplished a great deal of quality training but have much more to do. With the speed of technology and the large influx of hiring in the industry paired with the new PTC implementation, safety and quality training are necessary now more than ever. The BRS looks forward to our future partnership in moving safety and training to the forefront of the Railroad Signal industry.”

The Center is pleased to have the opportunity to work with the BRS. The public transportation industry and its unions facilitate the work of the National Signals Training Consortium.  For more information on the National Signals Training Consortium, view courseware samples on Transit Training Network or contact Project Manager Mark Dysart.
