Center Completes Development of First Traction Power Course

Posted August 2020

The Center’s ISD team for Traction Power has completed and uploaded Course 101: Overview, General Safety and Regulations of Traction Power Systems, the first course in the ongoing development of full courseware. This course is now available to consortium members on www.transittraining.net .

Traction Power Course 101 is an introductory course that offers learners a brief summary of the history of traction power systems, what the basic modes of traction power are and gives a brief summation of the Traction Power Consortium. The course also covers major safety concerns that are associated with traction power maintenance, inspection and troubleshooting. The course provides some standard practices that many agencies rely on for safety and security of their workers, including electrical and high voltage safety, arc flash safety and proper PPE. Also introduced in the course are the federal regulatory agencies and publications that are important to review and understand as traction power workers, and the course ends with a brief review of commonly used tools by traction power maintainers.

The Traction Power Consortium currently has nine agencies involved. The ISD team for Traction Power began course development in April of 2020 and expects to complete Course 102, Introduction to Traction Power, by mid-August. Course 103 on Substations and Course 104 on Overhead Systems are to begin development in early August. Level 100 will be rounded out with the completion of Course 105 on Third Rail Systems.
