Traction Power Training Consortium

About the Consortium

Launched in January 2020, the Consortium brings together transit agencies, labor unions, and instructional design professionals to develop high-quality, instruction-ready training materials aligned with APTA-approved and industry-recognized standards.

The Traction Power Consortium has focused on creating a comprehensive curriculum that includes both introductory and advanced courses for traction power maintainers. These interactive and practical courses are designed to support apprenticeship programs, enhance safety and reliability, and build internal technical capacity.

Course topics include:
    •	Power Distribution Fundamentals
    •	Catenary and Third Rail Systems
    •	Grounding and Bonding
    •	Emergency Power and Utility Power Management
    •	Tools and Test Equipment
    •	Industry Trends and New Technologies
    •	Worker Safety and Protection Procedures

Each course includes a full suite of training materials including participant guides, instructor guides, instructional videos, PowerPoint presentations with notes, hands-on activities, and knowledge checks which to support effective instruction in both classroom and field environments.
Where applicable, each Consortium course includes: instructor guide, participant guide, presentation slides, hands-on activities, quizzes, course assessments, answer sheets, handouts and job-aids. Video and eLearning modules are also included for some courses. Other deliverables for member agencies may include mentor checklists, searchable inventory of member location technologies, and eLearning modules.
